Sandra Layne: Mich. grandma convicted of murdering 17-year-old grandson, It took a Pontiac, Mich. jury two days of deliberation to convict 75-year-old Sandra Layne today with the second-degree murder of her 17-year-old grandson Jonathan Hoffman.

The Mich. grandma’s jury deliberations weren’t so much about whether or not she actually killed Jonathan by shooting him six times, but whether or not she would be convicted of first-degree murder or a lesser charge, according to The Huffington Post......examiner.

Layne also had a slim chance of being cleared of all charges based on self-defense.Back in May, 2012, a chilling 911 call, which was played during Layne’s trial, came in to the authorities:

"My grandma shot me. I'm going to die. Help. I got shot again," Hoffman told a dispatcher as he gasped for air.Over the course of the next six minutes, the gun slinging grandma would shoot at her grandson 10 more times, hitting the boy with a total of six bullets.

Layne’s defense claimed that the grandson was a drug addict, that the grandmother was afraid of him, that the two got into a heated argument over a failed drug test, and that the boy hit her prior to the shooting in the home they shared.

"I wanted him to pay attention to me. He had to listen. It wasn't a conversation. It was arguing. Swearing," Layne said in tearful testimony last week, explaining why she pulled out a gun.

Layne was examined by hospital staff after the shooting. No injuries were found on her person as a result of her being hit by her grandson. The grandma said she purchased the gun one month before the shooting.
