ALGIERS- Algiers turned light off from 20:30 to 21:30 local time on Saturday to mark Earth, a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), held this year in Algeria under the high patronage of President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
In the presence of children from green clubs and members of Sidra Association, the event’s organizers, the wali (governor) of Algiers, Abdelkader Zoukh, gave the signal for switching off the lights of the Grand Post building, followed by other official facilities.
The event was also attended by Minister of Post and ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) Houda Imane Feraoun and Minister of Communication Hamid Grine.
The headquarters of the Council of the Nation and the People’s National Assembly, Algiers administrative building, the Palace of Rais and the Martyr’s Memorial turned lights off to mark the Earth Hour.
It is the first time the Earth Hour event is celebrated nationwide.
Each of the Algerian 48 provinces chose a monument or a symbolic building to switch light off from 20:30 to 21:30 local time on Saturday.
